When Arthur Dennis Williams carved out the top of his school desk with a gouge he made from a pencil back in sixth grade, his future as an artist was born. Although it took another 20 years to begin carving for a living, the evidence of his success as a wood carver and sculpture surrounds him today in his gallery located in Paia town and at his home in Kula, on the island of Maui, in beautiful Hawaii. Completed works have been done in marble, alabaster, bronze and wood. Hawaiian woods used for his work include koa, milo, kou, sandlewood, mango, monkeypod and pheasant wood. "I look for roots, unusual growth patterns and wood with incredible grain and color." Today, the Arthur Dennis Williams Gallery is located at 43 Hana Highway, it highlights the combination of wood carvings and sculptures by Williams. |
